Title :

A group of 15 Chinese drawings of flowers from Canton or Macao, heightened in gum arabic or chinese white, on sheets watermarked I Taylor, large oblong folio (40 x 50 cm.), new mounts [China, 1805-1810].

Comments :

The most of them carry the mark I Taylor as used by John Taylor of Basted Mill, Wrotham in Kent, who was active from 1786 to 1801. It seems reasonable therefore to date the drawings to the last decade of the eighteen century or the first decade of the nineteenth. The most of drawings are with the pencil notes to the reverse and inscribed in margin with Chinese characters to the front.[Nice set, plate 13 and 15 are spotted].
For instance: [Plate 1]. 白杏 Bai xing. – 4. 大業山芝麻 Da ye shan zhima. Dodecandria monogynia. Handsome wild shrub. Grows in mountain called Fung wong shan near Macao. Painted by Wun-tchün at Canton or Macao about 1810. – [Plate 8]. 山搞树 Shan gao shu. Wild Tallow tree. This tree is found in great abundance in all wooded ( ?) places near Macao, as well at Canton. Flowers in the Spring. Painted by Wun-tchün at Canton or Macao about 1810. – [Plate12]. Shan pac 山白 [or ban] shim or shan kow nga. Pentandria monogynia, small bacciporous ( ?) tree. Flowers in the Spring near Macao. Painted by Wun-tchün at Canton or Macao about 1810. – [Plate13]. Xin ye lin jia 细叶鳞甲. – [Plate14]. 珠兰 Zhu lan. Chloranthus. Painted by Wun-tchün circa 1810. – [Plate15]. Shan ü mei yan.山美人 ? Painted by Wun-tchün circa 1810. Plant introduced to Macao about 1808 from Fung wong shan.
