Folio (39 x 57 cm, bound in 19th century marbled paper, VIII + 20 pp. + 21 plates, engraved by P. Fourdrinier, C. Grignion and others after Chambers, depicting architectural details, interiors, costume and pottery.

First edition (issue with French text) of Chambers’ first published work, to a large extent based upon notebook sketches made in 广州 Guangzhou, this series of illustrations depicting Chinese design and architecture… At the end of the explanatory text (pp.15-19) is an essay entitled “ De l’art de distribuer les jardins selon l’usage des Chinois ” (The art of laying out gardens among the Chinese), Löwendahl 487.

A good and large copy (39 x 57 cm), light spotting and occasional foxing, ownership inscription of R. Dardel.

The French version of Chambers’s Designs of Chinese was issued in London simultaneously with the English edition which appeared in May 1757
